Learn to Operate Your New Sailing Vessel
Are you fortunate enough to have access to a sailing vessel, but have never sailed before? Maybe you or a family member recently purchased a boat, and now are searching for a sailing course. You will want to consider Rya courses, which are designed by the Royal Yachting Association. First, you’ll take sailing courses teaching you the basics of becoming part of a sailing crew. You’ll then take a course to be certified as a day skipper. There are additional Rya courses which teach you skills beyond becoming a day skipper. However, once you have your day skipper certification, you have had many hours, and many miles, of sailing experience. Much of this experience under a sail will have taken place during the daytime, but some will have been at night as well.
The sailing courses you choose, whether they are rya courses or others, should teach you how to safely enjoy a day, or many days, at sea in your new watercraft. Rya courses are known worldwide, and when seeking trained sailors, both charter companies and governments look to those who have taken Rya courses. These courses are also offered around the world. Before selecting a location for your course, check if the RYA course offers tidal or non-tidal certification. If you will ever be navigating in tidal waters, you will want to take a course which properly trains you.
