Hours pass by as unborn baby is in fetal distress

A mother, at 42 weeks, reported to the hospital for labor and delivery without regular contraction.  She had complaints of back pain and reported having passed a bloody mucus plug.  She was not seen by any of the medical staff for over 2 hours at which point she was admitted to the labor and delivery unit.  Another two hours went by before one of the nurses contacted a doctor even though the fetal heart monitor had shown late decelerations and lack of decelerations.  These are signs of Fetal Distress and require immediate action.  It took the doctor an hour before he examined the mother.  The doctor finally arrived as the fetal heart tones were showing signs of severe fetal distress.  At that point, an emergency C-section was finally performed.  When the baby was born, he had a double loop of umbilical cord wrapped around his neck so tightly that the doctor had to clamp it and cut it off.  The baby was not breathing and required resuscitation.  The baby suffers from several severe disabilities including cerebral palsy and a seizure disorder.  The law firm that handled this case was able to achieve a settlement with a present value of $3.4 Million.
